Abstract

To explore sexual policies and problems in patient facilities for the mentally retarded, questionnaires concerning this issue were sent to institutions for the mentally retarded. One hundred thirty-one questionnaires were returned (response rate of 40%). Information concerning sex education programs and attitudes and policies toward sexuality of the mentally retarded was collected. Most facilities provided sex education (84%) and social activities (95%). However, explicit sexual activity other than masturbation by the mentally retarded was generally disapproved of and in many cases forbidden.
