Biochemical characterization of panicum species which are intermediate between C3 and C4 photosynthesis plants

Abstract

Panicum milioides, P. hians and P. laxum have photosynthetic characteristics which are intermediate between C3 and C4 plants. They show chlorophyll a/b ratios and levels of the decarboxylases, NADP+ and NAD+ malic enzyme and phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxykinase, which are similar to those found in C3 plants. 14CO2 pulse-12CO2 chase studies show 3-phosphoglyceric acid (3-PGA) as the primary product of photosynthesis in agreement with a high level of ribulose 1,5-diphosphate carboxylase (RuDPC) and a low level of PEPC; again C3 is indicated. However, ratios of 3-PGA phosphatase to phosphoglycolate phosphatase were typical of C4 plants. Ratios of RuDPC or RuDPO to PEPC were intermediate between similar ratios calculated for C3 and C4 species. The major photosynthetic CO2 assimilation pathway is C3 in these C3-C4 intermediate Panicum species.
