Biomechanical comparison of internal fixations of the posterior acetabular column

Abstract

Three alternative constructs for stabilization of isolated posterior column fractures were assessed by in vitro comparison, as well as the effect of hip flexion, while measuring the stability of the fixation using a specially designed joint simulator. Measurements of stiffness of the intact and reconstructed hemipelvis, and fracture site compliance in three orthogonal directions, were determined. No significant differences were noted in the stiffness values, while greatest stability was achieved by the fixation of a lag screw with a neutralization plate.
