Abstract

This review for the pharmacy clinician is a brief introduction into the role of L-carnitine in energy production as well as a summary of the therapeutic uses of L-carnitine. The authors discuss the biochemical basis for carnitine's role in energy metabolism, the function and sources of carnitine, pharmacokinetics and biopharmaceutical considerations, classification and description of deficiency disorders, and specific therapeutic implications for carnitine supplementation in the neonatal and preterm infant populations.
