Cholesterol and Caffeine Modulate Alcohol Actions on Cerebral Arteries and Brain

Abstract

Excessive alcohol consumption constitutes a major public health problem and a risk factor for neurological disease. In this chapter, we summarize current knowledge on modulation of alcohol effects on cerebral arteries and brain function by two common dietary components: caffeine and cholesterol. Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychostimulant, which is often mixed with alcohol. Caffeine-alcohol mixtures confer feelings of wakefulness and seem to counteract the loss of cognitive function driven by alcohol consumption. Mixing caffeine with alcohol has been proposed as neuroprotective, with mechanisms including enhanced generation of nitric oxide in cerebral arteries. However, caffeine masks several signs of alcohol intoxication and increases health risks associated with alcohol intake. Cholesterol is a key lipid component of Western diets. While cholesterol modulation of alcohol effects on cognition and behavior remains unstudied, both decreased and increased cholesterol levels in the cerebral artery wall protect against alcohol-induced vasoconstriction. Possible mechanisms of this protection are discussed.
