Abstract

A method to remove endotoxin from conventional polyethylene (CPE) and cross-linked polyethylene (XPE) with ethanol was investigated. Sample discs of CPE and XPE were exposed to adherent lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and then washed with 70% and 90% ethanol. The Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) assay was used to measure the adherent endotoxin. It was found that the method to clean polyethylene with ethanol, is not effective at removing LPS from disc of CPE and XPE. On the other hand, endotoxin levels in both polyethylene types were significantly reduced by washing with HCl.
