Different thermal responses on local application of norepinephrine from the preoptico-anterior hypothalamic area

Abstract

The study was aimed at locating the sites in the preoptico- anterior hypothalamic area (PO-AH) which give different responses on application of norepinephrine (NE). NE dissolved in saline and saline were injected in different regions of the PO-AH and adjoining areas, in free moving male rats through chronically implanted cannulae. NE application in the medial region of the PO-AH produced hypothermia. Hyperthermia was produced when NE was given in the ventrolateral regions of the PO-AH. Application of NE in adjoining areas and saline in the PO-AH did not produce any significant change in body temperature. The findings indicate that the NE system in the PO-AH may be involved in heat gain and heat loss. These two NE mediated functions may be controlled by different regions in the PO-AH.
