Recombinant Inbred Strain

Abstract

A recombinant inbred (RI) strain or recombinant inbred line (RIL) is a member of a family of strains that is used to study genetic, phenotypic, and environmental sources of variation. Each RI strain inherits a unique set of homozygous but recombinant chromosomes derived after several generations of intercrossing and inbreeding from two or more parental genomes. Each chromosome consists of a stable and alternating sequence of haplotypes inherited from inbred parental strains.
