Abstract

The system that degrades allantoin has been used to investigate the control of nitrogen metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Studies of this system are beginning to provide an appreciation of the complementary roles played by gene expression and intracellular compartmentation in the acquisition and utilization of nitrogenous metabolites.
