Studies on the enzymes of urea cycle intermediates in normal, infarcted and hypertrophied myocardial tissue of rat

Abstract

Arginase, argininosuccinase, argininosuccinate synthetase and ornithine aminotransferase have been estimated along with alanine, glutamate, aspartate, arginine and ornithine in myocardial tissue after producing myocardial infarction in experimental rats. The same were also estimated in right and left ventricular tissue after induction of hypertrophy by injecting isoproterenol. It was observed that the activities of the arginase and argininosuccinase increased significantly in hypertrophied and in infarcted myocardial tissue. No activity of argininosuccinate synthetase was detected either in normal myocardial tissue or in the myocardial tissue subjected to myocardial infarction. Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate aminotransferase was observed to increase in hypertrophied myocardial tissue. While a significant increase in the content of alanine and aspartate in infarcted myocardial tissue was observed, a significant fall in the content of glutamate and arginine was found in the same tissue. A fall in the content of glutamate, aspartate and ornithine was observed in hypertrophied mycardial tissue. These results are discussed in relation to production of ornithine for glutamate and polyamine production.
