Synthesis, Characterization and Study of the Thermal Stability of Dimeric Bis(Cyclopentadienyl)Lanthanide Furylmethoxide Complexes

Abstract

Four new binuclear organolanthanide alkoxides [Cp2Ln (0CH2C=CHCH—CH)] 2(Cp = C5H5; Ln = Nd, Sm, Dy, Yb) have been synthesized by the simple metathetical reaction of Cp3Ln with furfuryl alcohol in THF (tetrahydrofuran) solution at room temperature. These complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR, XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectra) and MS spectra, indicating that they are dimers bridged by the oxygen atoms of furylmethoxide ligands and intramolecular five-membered chelate rings formed by chelating coordination of furan rings exist in the title complexes. The thermal stability of all the complexes has been studied and compared. It was found that the Nd and Sm complexes are thermally unstable and tend to decompose into Cp3Ln and Ln(OR)3 species upon heating.
