Theophylline

Abstract

Theophylline is one of the classical drugs, for which a pharmacokinetically guided dosage optimization has been widely used in clinical settings in the last three decades. This adjustment for dosage requirements to the individual needs of the patient allowed for safe and effective therapy despite a narrow therapeutic range inthe presence of high interindividual pharmacokinetic variability. The continued benefit of therapeutic drug monitoring for theophylline substantially contributed to its historical place in the management of inflammatory respiratory diseases as well as its current role in clinical practice alongside with other new, powerful agents.
